Daimonji is an obon fire festival in Kyoto.
Every summer at the Obon festival, during 3 days, Japan welcomes the spirits of ancestors back to the world of the living. At the end of Obon, people light candles and bonfires to mark the departure of ancestors.
Kyoto celebrates this tradition by lighting large bonfires in symbolic shapes on the hills surrounding the city.
