Beautiful Japanese Kokeshi doll, representing a Jizo, a Buddhist deity dedicated to altruism.
In Japan, Jizô is the protector of dead children, still birthed and miscarried children.
He is represented with a childish face.
Traditionally, mothers who have lost a child make a red bib and hang it on a Jizo statue, symbolically protecting their lost child from cold during their travel to the afterlife.
Made and hand painted in Gunma prefecture (Japan).
